1 INT. CRASHDOWN – NIGHT (From Roswell Episode 101 Pilot)
Max and Liz are there alone.
MAX
I've never tried this before, but … maybe I can make the connection go the other way … so you can see, you know that … that I'm still me.
Max, who has been advancing slowly towards her, stops in front of her.
MAX (Cont’d)
I have to touch you.
Liz nods apprehensively. Max places his hands on each side of her head.
MAX
Now, just take deep breaths … and try to let your mind blank out.
Max stares intently at Liz who gets a rush of images: Young Max and young Isabel walking down the road and the Evanses finding them; Young Max seeing young Liz as he climbs down from the school bus; Max seeing Liz in the halls at school.
LIZ (VO)
I could feel everything he was feeling. I could feel his loneliness. For the first time, I was really seeing Max Evans, I saw me as he saw me. And the amazing thing was … in his eyes, I was beautiful.
Cut to:
2 INT. TOPOLSKY'S OFFICE (From Roswell Episode 103 Monsters)
Topolsky, acting as guidance counselor, is seated at her desk. Isabel sits across from her responding to her questions.
TOPOLSKY
Why don't you start by telling me what your dream job would be.
ISABEL
Supermodel.
TOPOLSKY
Now what job do you think you'll actually have in ten years?
ISABEL
I usually get what I want.
Cut to:
3 INT. MOTEL ROOM – NIGHT (From Roswell Episode 106 - 285 South)
Maria sits on the edge of the bed and Michael sits in a chair across from the bed.
MARIA
And so you'll know … I am not gonna be getting an "F" on this assignment … so you better start answering some questions. Right now, pally, and I mean for real. So, “favorite ice cream flavor”?
MICHAEL
Pistachio.
Maria sighs as she writes down his answer, repeating his response under her breath as she does so, then goes on to the next question.
MARIA
Uh, “favorite book”?
MICHAEL
James Joyce, Ulysses.
MARIA
(with disdain)
You have not read Ulysses.
MICHAEL
"What incensed him the most was the blatant jokes of the ones who pass it all off as a jest, pretending to understand everything and in reality not knowing their own minds." Page 655 ... told you you wouldn't understand. Next question.
MARIA
All right, if you're so smart, then how come you fail every class in school?
MICHAEL
What number is that?
MARIA
It's my own personal question, ok?
MICHAEL
I don't answer personal questions, ok?
MARIA
All right, how about just one personal question? You know, since I didn't turn you in back there. Why is it so important to you to find out where you come from?
MICHAEL
Because there's gotta be something better out there for me than Roswell, New Mexico.
Maria chuckles softly.
MICHAEL (Cont’d)
You think that's funny.
MARIA
No, no. It's just, um …
(sighs)
When I was a kid, I used to stay up at night and, um, make up stories about my father. You know, and who he was and ... what he was doing. And they all ended exactly the same way. He would come in a limo and pick me and my mom up … and take us off to some exotic place where we'd live like royalty.
(pathetic chuckle)
Because, you know, I thought to myself ... “there's got to be something better out there for me than Roswell, New Mexico”.
MICHAEL
(realizing she does understand)
Substitute a spaceship for a limo, and you know what I mean.
MARIA
(smiling)
Yeah.
Cut to:
4 INT. ATHERTON’S DOME - SECRET ROOM – DAY (From Roswell Episode 107 River Dog)
Michael, Liz, and Maria have already gone through the tunnel leading out of the room. Max, standing in front of the tunnel, turns back towards Isabel who is lost in deep thought, staring at and holding a necklace hanging from a wall in the room.
MAX
(sotto voce)
Isabel! Isabel!
Isabel grabs the necklace and follows Max into the tunnel.
Cut to:
5 INT. ISABEL EVANS’S BEDROOM – DAY (From Roswell Episode 107 River Dog)
The room has been ransacked. Deputy Owen is investigating the break-in. He notices the necklace Isabel is wearing.
OWEN
Where did you get that?
ISABEL
(searching her mind for a good lie)
Uh, at the mall. I kind of like the retro look. Why?
OWEN
I just haven't seen anything like that since I left the reservation.
ISABEL
(unsuccessfully trying to straighten a picture on her bedroom wall)
Well ... maybe they're branching out.
OWEN
(nods)
Right.
ISABEL
Which reservation?
OWEN
I grew up on the Mesaliko reservation just outside of town.
Cut to:
6 INT. MESALIKO CAVE – NIGHT (From Roswell Episode 107 River Dog)
River Dog is talking to Max and Liz about his meeting with Nasedo.
RIVER DOG
I once knew someone like you. I didn't know where he came from or why he was here. Stayed pretty much to himself. But he befriended me and everyone here. He began to trust me.
MAX
Do you know where I can find him?
RIVER DOG
I haven't seen him for 40 years. Besides me, the only man he trusted was Atherton. The man gave Atherton his necklace, the one you had.
MAX
What happened to him?
RIVER DOG
Atherton was murdered.
LIZ
Who killed him?
RIVER DOG
The man killed him.
MAX
Maybe he was defending himself. Atherton was some kind of UFO nut. He could have been trying to expose him, hurt him.
RIVER DOG
I was too far away to see what happened. But when I reached them, Atherton was dead.
MAX
When was this?
RIVER DOG
November 1959.
Cut to:
7 INT. EVANS’ LIVINGROOM – NIGHT (From Roswell Episode 111 The Toy House)
Diane is watching a video of Max and Isabel, when they were six years old, feeding birds in a park. Max approaches her, concerned.
MAX
Couldn’t sleep again?
DIANE
(looking up)
Max. I want to show you something.
She picks up the remote and fast forwards the tape.
DIANE (Cont’d)
Here it comes.
YOUNG ISABEL (on video)
Max! Mom, look. The bird is hurt. Something's wrong with its wing.
DIANE (on video)
Ok, guys. No, no, Maxie honey, get away from the bird. He could be sick. Oh, look at his wing. Ok, just … just leave it alone. I think its wing is broken. Max, honey, just put it down. Please.
On the video, young Max is ignoring Diane’s instructions and approaches the bird and picks it up. He holds the injured bird in his hands for a moment, then throws the bird into the air and it flies away.
DIANE (on video)
Philip. Philip! Did you see that?
Max’s reaction to watching himself on the video is astonishment, mixed with a little fear. The video ends.
DIANE
(to Max)
Can you— can you help me, Max? Can you tell me what just happened? That bird had a broken wing ... and when you touched it, it flew away, honey. It came to life.
Cut to:
8 EXT. FRAZIER WOODS – NIGHT (From Roswell Episode 112 Into the Woods)
Alex and Isabel are sitting close together on a boulder, stargazing.
ISABEL
(pointing to the sky)
And then to the right of the Milky Way … that's Orion.
ALEX
Oh, wow.
ISABEL
And see the North Star?
ALEX
Yeah.
ISABEL
Ok, now look a little to your left and a little further out … that small group of stars right there, that's the Cygnus constellation. It's the furthest we can see from here.
ALEX
It's amazing.
ISABEL
What is?
ALEX
Staring at the stars with you. I mean, I used to look up there, and stars were just stars. One was just as good as the next, but … somehow with you
(sighs)
I mean ... it's so wondrous, you know? I mean ... each star is ... is a mystery, you know, and so full of possibility. This is so much better than seeing a movie.
ISABEL
(smiling)
Thanks.
Cut to:
9 EXT. FRAZIER WOODS – NIGHT (From Roswell Episode 112 Into the Woods)
River Dog and Michael are walking through the woods when River Dog falls and groans in pain. Michael turns back for him.
MICHAEL
Hey, are you all right?
RIVER DOG
Give me your hand.
MICHAEL
Here.
RIVER DOG
(groaning in pain)
Whoa!
MICHAEL
(concerned)
What, what, what, what, what?
RIVER DOG
I ... I think I broke my ankle.
(panting in pain; points off in the direction they had been heading)
It's ... it's about a mile north of here. You keep going. Ah ... ah.
MICHAEL
(suspicious)
Why don't you fix it?
RIVER DOG
What?
MICHAEL
Your ankle.
RIVER DOG
What are you talkin' about?
MICHAEL
Why don't you tell me the truth?
RIVER DOG
The truth about what?
MICHAEL
About who you are.
RIVER DOG
You think I'm Nasedo.
MICHAEL
You know everything about us. You knew what was wrong with me when I was sick, and you knew exactly how to fix it. How did you know all those things? And why would you wanna help us if you weren't …
RIVER DOG
I'm sorry, Michael, but I'm not your father.
MICHAEL
Just had to make sure.
Michael leans over and places his hand on River Dog's ankle. Michael gets flashes of the symbols in the desert.
MICHAEL
(standing)
You can walk now.
RIVER DOG
Thank you.
(standing)
Now we're even.
MICHAEL
I don't think we'll ever be even.
Cut to:
10 EXT. RAILROAD TRACKS – DAY (From Roswell Episode 115: Independence Day)
Max and Michael are discussing Michael's black eye as Michael throws stones at a passing train.
MAX
How did it happen?
MICHAEL
He was drunk.
MAX
Hank? Has it happened before?
MICHAEL
Couple times. This was the worst, though. Never left a mark.
MAX
Michael ...
MICHAEL
Don't. I don't want you feeling sorry for me. I don't want anyone feeling sorry for me.
MAX
Everyone's gonna ask.
MICHAEL
Not if it's gone. Fix it. Please. I … I tried, but I ...
MAX
And what about the next one?
MICHAEL
There won't be a next one.
MAX
Michael, you don't have to protect him. He's not even your real father.
MICHAEL
No kiddin’.
Max places his hand over the bruise around Michael's eye; when he removes his hand the black eye is gone.
11 EXT. WOODED AREA - NIGHT (From Roswell Episode 115: Independence Day)
Hank drives into a wooded area, stops the car, pops something into his mouth from a small container and pockets the container. He then gets out of the car, opens the back of the station wagon, drags out and buries the body of a man that looks just like him, then gets back into the car. A bright light emanates from the car as he shapeshifts into a Hispanic male, and again pops something into his mouth from the container and pockets it.
12 INT. ROSWELL HIGH SCHOOL – SCIENCE CLASSROOM – DAY (From Roswell Episode 116 Sexual Healing)
Liz has reported to Mr. Seligman for detention. She’s standing next to a poster of a star system on the wall.
LIZ
(pointing to poster)
What is this?
SELIGMAN
Oh. Well, that's the Whirlwind Galaxy.
LIZ
Could there be a red star, or a red something in this area that isn't on this chart?
SELIGMAN
Well, it could be a red giant.
LIZ
A red giant. Isn't that ... Yeah, that's a star that's in its last stages of its life cycle, right?
SELIGMAN
Yes. A+ yet again.
Cut to:
13 INT. MICHAEL GUERIN’S APARTMENT LIVINGROOM – NIGHT (From Roswell Episode 116 Sexual Healing)
Max and Liz are there alone, standing very close to one another.
LIZ
Max. I need to find out where all this leads, too. Look.
Liz shows Max a strange rash that has appeared on her shoulder. Max puts his hand over it and it disappears.
MAX
It's gone.
LIZ
Thanks.
Max moves his hand down Liz's arm, and a glowing light follows his hand.
LIZ
Max ... do you understand any of this?
MAX
(breathless)
No.
LIZ
Can you take your shirt off?
MAX
Can I? Yeah.
Max takes off his shirt and Liz tries to create a glowing light on Max's body by running her hand over his chest.
LIZ
(disappointed)
I can't do it to you.
MAX
(smiling)
I'm glowing everywhere--my toes, my heart. You can't see it. It's on the inside.
Cut to:
14 EXT. ROSWELL DESERT ROADSIDE – NIGHT (From Roswell Episode 116 Sexual Healing)
Max and Liz are lying on a blanket in the desert, kissing. Max breaks the kiss.
MAX
Are you sure?
Before she can answer Liz hears a beeping sound and turns towards it.
LIZ
Oh, my God. Max, that's it.
MAX
What?
LIZ
That's the sound I heard in my vision.
MAX
Shh.
(listening)
It's over there. Come on.
They head towards the sound which brings them to the radio tower.
LIZ
This is it, Max.
MAX
Here. It's right here.
Max and Liz start shoveling the dirt at the spot where the beeping is coming from. They hit something and a bright light shoots into the sky.
LIZ
Max, something's down there.
Max picks up a glowing orb-shaped rock with an alien symbol inscribed on it.
MAX
It's the symbol from the cave painting.
LIZ
Is this from your home?
MAX
I don't know.
LIZ
Maybe it's a signal ...
(looking towards the sky) … for ...
MAX
Maybe.
